Alerts have been placed on commercial ships travelling in the seas surrounding Iran. Officials in Washington claimed intelligence suggests Tehran was facilitating fake communications to trick ships. It was claimed “spoofed bridge to bridge communications” were sent from ships claiming to be American or belonging to US allies.
Some vessels have confirmed interference with their GPS systems, with The Sun reporting US Central Command saying: “Vessels have reported GPS interference, bridge-to-bridge communications spoofing, and/or other communications jamming with little to no warning.”
“The US remains committed to working with allies and regional partners to safeguard the freedom of navigation, the free flow of commerce, and the protection of US vessels and personnel in this region.”
Tehran is believed to have placed GPS jammers on Abu Musa Island, administered by Iran but claimed also by the United Arab Emirates, which lies near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.
The intended aims is to reportedly to trick ships into Iranian waters giving authorities an excuse to size them.
